Cruises to Saint George's on Princess Cruises

Cruises visiting Saint George's, Grenada

Experience the charm of the 'Spice Isle' in Saint George's, a vibrant capital known for its colourful, Georgian architecture and picturesque, horseshoe-shaped harbour.

The atmosphere of Saint George's is a delightful mix of a bustling Caribbean port and a laid-back island community. The city is famous for its vibrant colours, with houses climbing the hillside around a stunning natural harbour called the Carenage. The air is filled with the scent of spices and the sounds of local life. While it can feel busy and energetic, a sense of a relaxed, tropical pace is never far away. It is a place that feels authentically Caribbean.

The cultural significance of Saint George's is deeply rooted in its colonial history. The city was originally built by the French and later taken over by the British, and this legacy is visible in the architecture of the city and the names of the streets and forts. Grenada's identity as the 'Spice Isle' is a key part of its culture, with the production of nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves playing a major role in its history and economy. The local culture is a brilliant fusion of African, European, and West Indian influences, which is reflected in its music, food, and traditions.

The local cuisine in Saint George's is a flavourful testament to its status as the 'Spice Isle'. Spices are used in almost everything, from savoury dishes to sweet treats. The national dish is 'Oil Down', a hearty stew made with breadfruit, callaloo, and salted meat, all cooked in coconut milk. Fresh seafood is abundant, and the local markets are a feast for the senses, offering fresh fruit, vegetables, and, of course, a huge variety of spices. Eating here is a brilliant way to experience the true flavours of Grenada.

Saint George's is a fantastic cruise destination because the cruise port is located at the foot of the town, offering incredibly easy access to the main attractions. A short walk from the ship takes you directly to the Carenage and the heart of the city, allowing you to quickly immerse yourself in its culture and charm.
