Cruises to Kahului on Princess Cruises

Cruises visiting Kahului, United States

Kahului is the main port on the island of Maui, famous for its world-class beaches, lush valleys, and as a gateway to the famous 'Road to Hana'.

Kahului offers a distinct atmosphere that is more commercial and functional than the island's resort areas, yet it provides a true glimpse into local life. The ambience is one of a bustling, working town where you can experience the authentic, everyday rhythm of Maui. While it serves as a central hub for transportation and commerce, its proximity to the island's natural wonders makes it an exciting base for adventure.

The cultural significance of Kahului and the wider island of Maui is deeply rooted in Hawaiian history and the sugar cane industry. The city's growth was driven by its role as a key port for the sugar plantations, which brought a diverse mix of people from around the world to the island. Maui is also a place of great historical significance to the Hawaiian people, and its legends and traditions are a central part of the island's identity.

When it comes to local cuisine, Kahului offers a delicious taste of traditional Hawaiian food and fresh island ingredients. A must-try dish is a 'plate lunch', which typically includes a main entree, two scoops of rice, and a scoop of macaroni salad. The Maui Swap Meet, held every Saturday, is a great place to sample a variety of local food from different vendors. Other must-try specialities include fresh poke bowls and a wide variety of fresh, locally grown tropical fruits.

Kahului is an exceptional cruise destination because it provides unparalleled access to one of Hawaii's most iconic natural attractions. From the port, you can embark on the famous 'Road to Hana', a scenic highway that winds past dramatic waterfalls, lush rainforests, and beautiful black sand beaches.
