Cruises to Corfu on Fred. Olsen Cruises

Cruises visiting Corfu, Greece

Discover a stunning island paradise where Venetian elegance meets Greek charm, known for its verdant hills, beautiful beaches, and a UNESCO World Heritage Old Town.

The atmosphere of Corfu is a truly enchanting blend of cultures. The island's Venetian, French, and British past has created a unique, cosmopolitan feel. Corfu Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is filled with grand architecture, elegant promenades, and narrow streets. While the town is bustling with life, the rest of the island offers a more laid-back, tranquil feel. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with a genuine sense of warmth from the locals.

The cultural significance of Corfu is deeply rooted in its history as a strategic port in the Ionian Sea. The island has been a crossroads of civilisations, most notably with its long-term Venetian rule, which is evident in the two formidable fortresses and the elegant architecture of the Old Town. Its rich history is also visible in its British influence, particularly in the sports of cricket and ginger beer. The island's cultural identity is a unique mix of Greek traditions with Italian and British influences, making it a truly distinct place.

The local cuisine of Corfu reflects its diverse history, with Italian and Venetian influences on classic Greek dishes. 'Pastitsada', a pasta dish with beef or chicken in a rich tomato sauce, and 'Sofrito', a slow-cooked beef stew, are both popular specialities. Fresh seafood is abundant, often simply grilled or fried. The island is also famous for its local Kumquat liqueur and sweets. Dining is a social affair, with many tavernas serving traditional dishes in a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.

Corfu is a great cruise destination because its main port is located within easy reach of the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town. With just a short walk or taxi ride, passengers can be exploring the beautiful historic streets, making it an incredibly convenient and culturally rich day trip.
