Gran Canaria

Las Palmas

The island of Gran Canaria has a myriad of landscapes to explore. There are plenty of beaches near the capital with great opportunities for swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing. After a busy day by the sea, the island’s street food and tavernas offer Spanish dishes with an African twist. Expect local seafood and vegetables with added spice, plus gorgeous local wines from the regional Listan grape. Venturing out of the city, there are several opportunities for a hike through your choice of scenery; palm groves, orange orchards, pine forests and mountains await! The Dunes of Maspalomas are a sight to behold. On the South of the island, this nature reserve is a great place to spot local migratory birds or try your hand at sandboarding. For those looking for a more relaxed way to sample the wilds of the island, the Jardín Canario de Viera y Clavijo botanical gardens lie just inland from Las Palmas, with 27 hectares of local and endangered flora and fauna to discover.

La Palma

Santa Cruz de La Palma

An exploration of Santa Cruz’s old town is an excellent way to spend your day on this beautiful Canary island. This area holds marvellous secrets of ancient trade routes and piracy and has a distinct beauty with its gorgeous wooden balconies overhanging the cobbled streets. In contrast, the modern promenade offers a quiet stroll with amazing ocean views. Known as the ‘fair isle,’ La Palma is drenched in beautiful greenery and flowers. The Caldera de Taburiente National Park was formed by a volcanic crater and is today filled with lush forests, colourful waterfalls and deep ravines, surrounded by jagged peaks. The island is also known for its unique black sand beaches, hillside vineyards and delicious cuisine inspired by its position close to both Europe and Africa.

Tenerife

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The capital of this central Canarian island is instantly recognisable by its modern auditorium building which stands out in the harbour. Explore further into the city and you will find a treasure trove of attractions. The Palmetum is a botanical garden housing Europe’s largest collection of palm trees, plus several other tropical species, making it a great habitat for local birds. If you’re looking for somewhere more rural and rustic for a hike, Anaga Rural Park lies just outside the city in the mountains and offers plenty of walking routes to explore the native laurel forests. Back in the city, the Our Lady of Africa Market sells local produce from across the island; sample local seafood, fruits and vegetables in this historic covered space. Tenerife also has plenty of beaches to choose from, with both white or black sand options. One of the best is the Playa de las Teresitas, which is around four miles from the city and has great facilities for families, plus amazing views of the mountains and ocean bay.

Lanzarote

Arrecife

The island of Lanzarote has everything you expect from a Canarian paradise - beautiful beaches, great food and a relaxed holiday vibe. The capital Arrecife has a number of interesting sites to visit, such as its saltwater lagoon, historic castles and great shopping streets. If you’re looking for something unique to do on your cruise, this island also has a number of special gems that are worth venturing out of the city for. Its landscape is formed of black volcanic rock, which contrasts against the beautiful white buildings, cacti and aloe vera, giving this island an almost other-worldly quality. Head on a tour of the Mountains of Fire to see volcanic cones and lava fields reminiscent of the surface of Mars or delve underground to Los Jameos del Agua, where native artist César Manrique has designed a truly unique social space in the volcanic caverns.

La Gomera

San Sebastian de La Gomera

As one of the smaller Canary islands, La Gomera is often missed on cruise itineraries which is a shame, as its beauty and history make it a fascinating destination. There are several links to Christopher Columbus, who visited San Sebastian as he journeyed to America. The Casa de Colón is now a museum but was once Columbus’ accommodation on the island and the striking fifteenth-century Torre Del Conde takes you back to the time of his arrival with its beautiful mediaeval architecture. Next to this castle lies one of the island’s best beaches, the Playa de San Sebastián, with plenty of restaurants and beautiful swaths of golden sand. For a view of the whole island, journey up to the Alto de Garajonay, the island’s highest peak. From here, the subtropical flora and fauna can be seen in all its glory, as can several other Canary Islands.

Fuerteventura

Puerto del Rosario

There’s so much to do on the island of Fuerteventura with its 150 beaches, amazing volcanoes and seemingly ever-lasting sunshine. Close to Puerto del Rosario lies Playa Chica, a quiet little beach within easy walking distance from the town centre. Here, there’s the option to relax as you sunbathe or pump up the adrenaline renting a jet ski. The island is quieter than some of its neighbours, so it’s possible to avoid the crowds and experience the laid-back Canarian vibe. Around the coast, you will be able to explore sand dunes and white-washed picture-perfect villages. As you explore inland, you’ll see the stunning volcanic landscape; a four-hour guided hike up Bayuyo volcano will reward you with breathtaking views of the whole island, including its mighty crater lakes.
