Expert guide to private cruise islands in the Caribbean
Arriving at a private tropical island is often the highlight of a cruise holiday. With secluded coves, water parks and snorkeling trails being just a few highlights, there’s a wide array of excitement to be had. Each cruise company has created their own unique space in paradise.

Tips for activities
- The family beach is by far the busiest place on the island so arrive early to secure your spot.
- You need to be a good swimmer to use Pelican Plunge as it can be in deep water at high tide. You must be over 38 inches to play.
Tips for food and drink
- Serenity BBQ is by far the easiest spot for lunch away from the crowds, so we suggest eating here if you don't have kids. Serenity is also the only place with ribeye steak and sometimes other extra items if there's a surplus onboard your ship.
- A Konk Kooler is the main drink in the island and highly recommended - it's Disney’s take on rum punch.
- If you have any dietary requirements, speak to your server the evening before. You'll be able to pick up your personal meal only at Cookies BBQ.
Extra tips from us to you
- Remember your Key to the World card as you disembark, you'll need this as you explore the island.
- There are towels on the gangway to use during your day, so no need to bring them off the boat.
- If you head to the post office near the dock, you can send a card home with Disney’s very own postmark.
- If you're looking for a character picture on your cruise, Castaway Cay is the perfect place to do it as there's more space and the backdrops are far superior to the ship.
- Mount Rustmore is a great place for a family photo - head there when there's no characters for the place all to yourselves.
- The cabanas usually sell out to Concierge guests so it is unlikely anyone else will be able to book one. You may be lucky though to get someone's cancelled cabana if you keep checking online.
- Any souvenirs you buy can be delivered back to your room, so no need to hold back on the purchases.
- No need to rush back to the ship. A few hours before departure is the most peaceful time on the island and the ship won't leave without you (the crew do a sweep of the island to make sure).
