Expert guide to private cruise islands in the Caribbean
Arriving at a private tropical island is often the highlight of a cruise holiday. With secluded coves, water parks and snorkeling trails being just a few highlights, there’s a wide array of excitement to be had. Each cruise company has created their own unique space in paradise.

Tips for activities

  • If you're planning on doing some of the more popular excursions, you'll need to book in advance - don't wait until you get to the island as it's likely the slots will all be taken already. Specifically, we suggest pre-booking the dune buggies, fishing and boat tours.
  • Princess Cays has some of the best snorkeling waters of any private Caribbean island so it's an activity definitely worth doing if you love the water.
  • If you're looking for a quieter beach, head South from the dock. The majority of cruisers will go North, leaving the opposite direction pretty clear. Be aware that there's steps and a bridge to access this beach so it's not accessible for all.
  • Bring water shoes for the beaches which are rocky in places.
  • Pelican’s Perch has the only pool on the island and it's shallow to cater for younger children. Note that children who are not yet potty trained are not allowed in the pool.

Tips for food and drink

  • The drinking age at Princess Cays is 21. Although it's younger in the rest of the Bahamas, Princess is an American company and so the age is the same as that onboard.
  • Princess cruisers will be able to use their drink package on the island, but this isn't the case for those on a Carnival ship.
  • Whilst the all-inclusive buffet gets good reviews, it is quite limited in its offering. If you want more choice, you're best to head back to the ship for lunch.

Extra tips from us to you

  • Be aware that with no jetty, there's a tender to the island from your ship. Ensure you have everything you need packed for the day as it's a hassle to retrieve something you've forgotten.
  • If you plan on buying souvenirs from the local craft market, you will need to bring a credit card or US dollars.
  • There is Medallion Net WiFi on the island, which is unusual in the Bahamas.
  • Bring your bug spray ashore as cruisers reviews have said it's much needed in certain weather conditions.
